Type
If you follow the menu Image down to "Type", you will read the content of the pixels.
If the image is monocolor, information can be encoded as 8/16/32 bits. If the image is a multicolour one, it is actually the combination of three images in three different color band, which correspond to a RGB image. Such an image can be manipulated through the Color action, and through the plugin "Align R/G/B plans"
If you click on a different type, you may modify the type of the image according to the next analyse you intend to do. However, a 8 bit image cannot be treated as a multicolour image - even if you change its "type"
