February 2010: the last version of SalsaJ is 1.4, available for all computers. All the necessary plugins and tools are included. Just download the version corresponding to your computer:
SalsaJ is based on the Java Virtual Machine software. Java is usually already installed on your computer. So you have nothing to install.
Only if SalsaJ would not run at all, or send an error message, then try to update Java or install it from this web page.
Previous versions (not to be used anymore)
2005: The first version of SalsaJ was 1.1
SalsaJ is a software dedicated to image handling and analysis in the classroom. It is particularly adapted to professional astronomy images. It is written in Java and can be used on several platforms for which there is a Java environment. It is based on ImageJ, a free Java software created by Wayne Rasband (Reseach Service Branch, National Institute of Mental health, Bethesda, Maryland, USA).
For PC Windows :
If you have Java installed (J2SE 5.0 ) download, uncompress SalsaJ_V1.1-Windows and run setup.exe. It will create a Salsaj shortcut onto your desktop.
If you want to use the webcam plugin you need to install Java Media Framework (JMF,version 2.1.1)
You can also download a complete version with Java, JMF and the webcam plugin included : salsaj_v1.1-windows-jdk-webcam
For Mac OS :
If you have Java installed (J2SE 5.0 ) download and uncompress SalsaJ_V1.1-Mac. Then go into the SalsaJ directory and launch salsaj.
If you don't have Java1.5 (J2SE 5.0) but only Java1.4, replace the file salsaj.jar in your install directory by this one : salsaj_1.3beta_Java1.4
If you want to use the webcam plugin you need to install Java Media Framework (JMF,version 2.1.1)
For Linux :
If you have Java installed (J2SE 5.0 ) download and uncompress SalsaJ_V1.1-Linux. Then go into the SalsaJ directory and launch salsaj.
If you want to use the webcam plugin you need to install Java Media Framework (JMF,version 2.1.1)
Update from 2006
UPDATE : If you want to update SalsaJ, you can download the file "salsaj_1.x.jar". Rename it to "salsaj.jar" and replace the JAR file in the SalsaJ directory by this new one .

UPDATE : New Webcam Plugin with full control of webcam's amplifier. In webcams modified according to the SC2 standard it allows keep the amplifier off before and during exposure and to turn it on only during chip readout, eliminating the "hot corner" effect. Just replace old "Webcam" plugin with the plugins directory .

USB-LPT converter
In order to circumvent problem that modern laptops do not have LPT ports, necessary to control long exposure webcams, we have manufactured special USB-LPT converter (standard converters don't do the job) and new version of SalsaJ . Together, converter with new SalsaJ allow to control webcam through 2 USB ports. Note that the USB-LPT converter works only with Windows operating system, see also detailed description and installation guide .
Schools participating in the project should contact national coordinators, others are invited to contact the Astrokrak internet store at http://www.euhou.net/
