Venice sells gondolas and a sunset; Florence sells a dome and a skyline. Kraków's Old Town sells something quieter - a close, lamp-lit square a couple can circle twice before choosing where to sleep. There's no dark-sky reserve inside these walls, but there are terraces, upper floors and courtyards that hold the Square's glow at a comfortable distance. Here's where I'd point two people looking for that quieter angle on the Old Town, and, a short walk over, its Kazimierz neighbour.
The Square's Glow and the Quiet Above It
Every old town has its glow - Kraków's comes off the Main Market Square, amber and steady until well past midnight. My wife and I have a habit wherever we travel: step outside after dinner and see how far the light carries before it softens. Here it softens surprisingly fast, in the side streets and courtyards behind the big façades. I used to plan gingerbread workshops the same way, working out what was actually visible before promising anyone a view. A dark-sky hunter would call that shadow light pollution; a couple wants it for exactly the opposite reason - and that's how I sorted the hotels below.
Perches Above the Market Square
Three hotels sit close enough to the Square to feel its pulse, yet each claims a quieter vantage - a window, a floor, a street back - worth weighing before you book.
9.2 Superb · 925 reviews
Setting: a 15th-century tenement directly on the Main Market Square - the closest thing here to a box seat at the opera. Rooms promise what the hotel calls unforgettable views of the Old Town, as close to a private skyline as this district offers. The Wentzl Restaurant, founded in the 18th century, has been serving European dishes long enough to outlast most of the stars overhead. More at wentzl.pl ↗.

9.1 Superb · 1145 reviews
Setting: between the Old Town and Kazimierz, 700 metres from Wawel Castle - a genuine midpoint rather than a stretch of either claim. Some rooms come with what the hotel calls stunning city views, the nearest thing to an elevated vantage in this guide, and are soundproofed, a detail that matters more on a quiet weekend than most people admit. The Main Market Square is 1 km away. More via queenhotel.pl ↗.

9.0 Superb · 715 reviews
Setting: on the Royal Route, overlooking the 17th-century Church of St Peter and Paul, 350 metres from the Square. Breakfast is served in 14th-century cellars, about as close to time travel as a buffet gets. Wawel Castle is 450 metres away; Kazimierz, 700. Reviews and rates on Tripadvisor ↗.

The Old Palace Route
History does the romantic work for this trio - each sits inside the Old Town proper, a short walk from the Square, carrying centuries in its walls rather than a river view.
9.0 Superb · 1574 reviews
Setting: a Renaissance palace just off the Square, operating since the 17th century - Kraków's oldest hotel, by its own account. Heated floors and Italian fittings in the bathrooms make a weekend feel like an occasion rather than a stopover, and wellness and spa access comes with the room rate, no add-on required. Wawel Castle is a 10-minute walk; Kazimierz, a kilometre. Compare rates via Tripadvisor ↗.

8.7 Fabulous · 766 reviews
Setting: 210 metres off the Square, close enough to stumble home from dinner without a map. Rooms keep old-school docking stations alongside the minibar, a small reminder of when this update was done, while a sauna and a compact gym round out the extras. Wawel Castle is a 20-minute walk; Kazimierz, 1.5 km. Have a look at this boutique hotel before booking elsewhere.

8.7 Fabulous · 1907 reviews
Setting: a main Old Town street, seven minutes from the Square on foot - closer to the action than either palace above. Minimalist rooms trade centuries-old frescoes for air-conditioning and flat-screens, its own kind of honesty. Wawel Castle and Kazimierz are both five minutes away on foot. Among hotels in Kraków Old Town, this is the one that admits it's modern.

Just Beyond the Old Town Line
Not every option here sits inside the old walls. These five claim central Kraków or the Old Town's edge, close enough to walk in minutes.
8.8 Fabulous · 5877 reviews
Setting: under a kilometre from St. Mary's Basilica, Wawel Castle six minutes on foot. The restaurant is unusually upfront about mood, offering dinner and cocktails in what it calls a traditional, modern or romantic ambience, rare for a hotel description to name the occasion outright. A sun terrace and outdoor seating area give you somewhere to sit with that mood after dark. See rates on Tripadvisor ↗.

8.7 Fabulous · 3247 reviews
Setting: 750 metres from the Old Town proper, by its own description, nearer the Vistula Boulevards than the Square. Rooms here cycle through six changing light colours, as close to mood lighting as anything in this guide gets. A garden with a terrace and a games room round out the common areas. 9.3 Superb · 1415 reviews
Setting: 600 metres from the Square, with a sauna and gym for the morning after a late dinner. Rooms are plain but complete - fridge, desk, safe - and conference facilities suggest this one also handles business travellers, which keeps rates grounded. Kazimierz is 2 km away. Book via Booking.com ↗.

8.8 Fabulous · 2650 reviews
Setting: central Kraków, 1.5 km from the Schindler Factory Museum rather than the Square - worth noting if Old Town proximity matters more than the address suggests. Some rooms come with a terrace, a rare extra in this guide. The restaurant mixes Polish, Thai and American menus with vegetarian and gluten-free options, useful when two people want different things for once. Details on Google Travel ↗.

8.8 Fabulous · 1373 reviews
Setting: five minutes from the Square, ten from Kazimierz, a fairly central claim for a chain hotel. Two restaurants and Kosher meals widen the dinner options more than most hotels here manage. A free gym and a bottle of mineral water left in every room are practical touches rather than romantic ones, but they add up. Rates at ihg.com ↗.

Across in Kazimierz, a Few Minutes' Walk
Kazimierz, the former Jewish district, borders the Old Town rather than sitting inside it - close enough to walk, distinct enough to feel like a different evening out.
8.7 Fabulous · 2717 reviews
Setting: a historical building in the heart of Kazimierz, walking distance from both the Old Town and Wawel Castle. Rooms are straightforward - private bathroom, satellite TV, free internet - without much embellishment, suiting travellers who want the district more than the décor. Pets cost 50 PLN extra per night, worth flagging before you pack the dog. Book via Booking.com ↗.

8.9 Fabulous · 1423 reviews
Setting: a 15th-century building just off the Old Synagogue, with wooden ceilings and beams dating to the 17th and 18th centuries - older than most hotels on this list. A sauna and a terrace give you somewhere to sit once the sightseeing is done. Wawel Castle is a 10-minute walk. Full details ->.

8.9 Fabulous · 2249 reviews
Setting: Kazimierz, 300 metres from the Tempel Synagogue, with exotic-wood furniture that sets it apart from the area's plainer conversions. Some rooms have balconies, a genuine rarity in this guide. The Old Town is 850 metres away, Planty Park 750 metres the other direction. Details at hotelcolumbus.pl ↗.

Setting: a few steps from Wolnica Square in Kazimierz, with Wawel Castle 800 metres off. A children's playground on site is an odd match for a romantic shortlist, worth knowing if you're travelling as a couple rather than a family. Browse hotels in Kazimierz, Kraków for current rates.

Which One, If You Make Me Choose
A few other cities answer the romance question with astronomical clocks or observatory domes; Kraków's Old Town answers with lamp-lit façades and a square that never quite goes dark. None of these fifteen will get you a clear view of the Milky Way, but several will get you a terrace, a courtyard, or at least a window worth sharing. For sheer nerve, I'd pick Wentzl, for putting a couple on the Square itself; for quiet, Rubinstein's older bones win. Either way, let the front desk confirm opening hours before you set out for the evening.
