If Ibiza had been drawn by a Baltic surveyor, it might look like Mielno: a strip of land between the Baltic Sea and Jamno Lake, with a town laid along it. It is often called the Polish Ibiza, although Ibiza has never had to share its footprint with the ninth largest lake in Poland.
I spent years as a gingerbread-guild guide in Toruń, so I read towns by their edges. Mielno has two, and the lodge you pick decides which one you wake up beside. Below you'll find the promenade, the lake, the harbour at Unieście, Gąski Lighthouse and the cycle routes, each matched with one of four lodge hotels.
A Spit With Two Shorelines
Mielno works like a sandwich. Lake Jamno lies a few hundred metres south of the sea beach, so the sea is on one side and still water on the other. The town keeps two mascots: a deer and a fairly new walrus, both popular photo stops.
In my guild years I learned to plan a day around when the light is useful. I do the same here, so the thread through this guide is light and horizon: where the lamp stands, where the shoreline opens, and which base puts you nearest. For the full range of beds, see the hotels and apartments in Mielno.
Friendship Promenade and the Walrus
The promenade is Mielno's main street with the roof taken off. It is a 3 km walking track along the coast, from 1 Maja street in Mielno to Unieście. Benches, observation decks and cafes line the route, and it is a favoured spot for evening walks and sunsets.
Near the main beach entrance stands the walrus, a symbol of Mielno as the capital of winter swimming. My view: if the promenade is your reason for coming, sleep near the middle of town and let the evenings take care of themselves.

Most lodges are a cottage with a kettle. Camp Nord is a cottage with a wellness department attached, and it is my pick for the promenade. Of the lodge hotels in Mielno here, it sits closest to the train station. You give up the beach-door convenience of Tu Urlop and gain wellness packages and a games room.

Lake Jamno: Water Tram, Cruises and Kayaks
The lake is Mielno's quiet twin. A water tram runs between Mielno and Unieście, and in summer the tram called Koszałek is worth a cruise. Marinas and rental points offer kayaks, pedal boats and motorboats, and regular passenger cruises show Mielno from a different side.
On the Vistula I learned that a boat ride shows a town from the side it doesn't advertise. The lake does the same for Mielno. Timetables shift with the season, so ask your front desk and the local tourist information point before you plan around a departure.

Tu Urlop is the lodge for people who measure a holiday in minutes to the sand. It is a short walk from the beach and has lake or garden views. Against Camp Nord you trade the wellness extras for a plain family kitchen and a playground. Google Travel listing ↗

Unieście Harbour and the Forest Loop
At the far end of the promenade lies Unieście, a fishing village 2 km away where you can buy fresh, smoked and fried fish. Treat it as the town's pantry.
For something shadier there is the Forest Loop of Adventures and Mysteries. The nature trail passes settlements, bunkers, old forest and dunes, with its entrance at 1 Maja Street. A cousin of the nature reserve, only with a bunker. On a wet day, Zagroda Jamno is an open-air museum of 19th-century architecture.
Harbour and trail hours vary, so your front desk and the tourist information point are the people to ask.
Gąski Lighthouse and the 16th Meridian
Light-minded travellers should make the pilgrimage to Gąski, about 10 km from Mielno. The brick tower dates from the winter of 1877/78, stands 50.2 m tall and is the second largest lighthouse in Poland. Its lantern is visible in good weather from about 36 km, and it is open to the public.
Nearby, the 16th Meridian Monument in Chłopy marks that line with a boulder. A meridian is a tidy thing to find on a coast road. If I could keep only one day trip, it would be this one. Ask the front desk or the tourist information point for opening days first.

Stay at Arkadia if your plan includes a 10 km drive to a lighthouse. It has free on-site parking, so the car stays put until morning. You trade a quick walk to the beach for a seasonal pool and a garden, much as a country cottage trades the shore for its lawn. See the lodge ->

Cycling the Coast: EuroVelo 10 and the Jamno Loop
Mielno sits on a very long cycle route. The international route R10, the Hanseatic Coastal Route (EuroVelo 10), runs 8,539 km around the Baltic basin, and a stretch passes the town. Local riders also like the coastal trail and the loop around Lake Jamno.
If cycling tires out the children, the Tukan treetop adventure park is the usual fallback. My rule from years of leading groups: plan the effort in the morning and the soaking afterwards. That favours a base with a hot tub waiting.

Anetta sits further out than the promenade lodges, and it earns that distance with a soaking routine: saltwater pool, hot tub, outdoor fireplace and a garden. Think of a village guesthouse that happens to own a pool. You give up the walk to the front of town, since the promenade is 3.3 km away, and gain soundproofed family rooms. Tripadvisor reviews ↗

When to Come, and What the Sky Does
The calendar swings between extremes. Winter swimming is the town's trademark, and summer usually brings open-air concerts and other events. Dates change each year, so check the local tourist information point before you book.
One honest note for astro-minded readers: Mielno is a resort, not a dark-sky preserve. Treat the starry sky as a bonus, and the lighthouse and the promenade at evening as the main show. If you are lugging a tripod, pick the lodge with parking.
In July the town is Ibiza with a lake. In January it is a polar-bear club with a seafront.
