Every great European city eventually plants a garden for its dead, and Paris keeps the famous one. Kraków's counterpart is Rakowicki Cemetery, opened in 1803 north-east of the Old Town and now about 42 hectares of funerary art. What follows covers the cemetery and its one great night, the sights between it and the Old Town, the dark-season calendar, and four central bases, each matched to a different plan.
A Garden Planned for the Dead
The first burial took place on 15 January 1803, on a plot of just 5.6 hectares. The grounds were enlarged in 1836, laid out as a park by Karol Kremer, and blessed on 2 November 1840. Jan Matejko lies in the 1886 extension, and the actress Helena Modrzejewska is buried here too, so the guest list reads like a society that never stopped receiving. The site has carried heritage listing since 1976.
My view, formed in my guild years walking visitors through Toruń's old streets: treat it as an open-air gallery rather than a grim errand, and arrive before you are tired.
The Night the Cemetery Glows
On 1 November, a public holiday, Poles visit family graves, and by evening Rakowicki holds tens of thousands of candles. The city adds tram lines 81-89 and bus lines 801-805 from 30 October to 2 November 2026. On 31 October the sun sets at 16:21, after the clocks went back on 25 October, so the show starts early. The crowds peak between 31 October and 2 November.
The gingerbread guild taught me that the best hour of a busy place is the one just before everyone else's. Settle the bed early; there is a full list of hotels and lodgings in Krakow.
Gates, a Barbican and Matejko's Two Addresses
St. Florian's Gate, first mentioned in 1307 and 33.5 m tall, is the only medieval gate left standing. Beside it the Barbican, built around 1498, bristles with 130 embrasures; in October 2026 it opens Tuesday to Sunday, 10:00-16:00, for PLN 22. Down Floriańska, at no. 41, stands the house where Matejko was born, worked and died. It is a National Museum branch, closed Mondays and free on Tuesdays. He is buried at Rakowicki, which makes the whole district a commute he never had to take.

The pick for the northern Old Town. Bubble Hostel stands 200 m from St. Florian's Gate, which puts the cemetery roughly 1.6 km away, nearer than the Wawel-side bases. The trade-off is a longer walk south to the castle. Galeria Krakowska, the shopping centre built over the station platforms, is 400 m off, and the Cloth Hall and St. Mary's are 500 m. For the cemetery, go to the Teatr Słowackiego stop, 5 minutes from the gate, for tram 72 or 84 (timetable of 4-8 November 2026). It is the Old Town's north turnstile, with an elevator, laundry and a good breakfast. More on this base: hotels near St. Florian's Gate.
Theme: the north gate.
Facts: free WiFi throughout; family rooms; non-smoking rooms; daily housekeeping.

Leonardo's Ermine, 80 m from the Gate
The Czartoryski Museum began in Puławy in 1796 as Princess Izabela's "temple of memory". Today it shows Leonardo da Vinci's Lady with an Ermine, plus Rembrandt's Landscape with the Good Samaritan, in a building reopened on 19 December 2019 after a renovation that began in 2010. It is open Tuesday to Sunday, 10:00-18:00, with timed tickets at PLN 65 (PLN 50 reduced). Tuesday is free, but the free slots are handed out only at the ticket office on the day.
My preference is the paid timed slot over the free queue; a painting like this deserves company you chose.
The Square the Trumpeter Never Finishes
Every hour, day and night, a trumpeter plays the hejnał from St. Mary's taller tower and breaks off mid-note. Inside, Veit Stoss's altarpiece, carved from 1477 to 1489, opens around 11:50 Monday to Saturday. Visiting runs 11:30-18:00 Monday to Saturday and 14:00-18:00 on Sundays, for PLN 20. The Bugle Tower is shut from November to April. The Rynek Underground below the square takes about 90 minutes (PLN 45) and is closed on the second Monday of the month.

The pick for a Main Square base. Globtroter sits a block from Main Market Square, so the cemetery is roughly 1.8 km away (the cemetery-St. Mary's distance). You gain cobbled streets, theatres and bars on the doorstep and give up a quiet northern address. Wawel is around 15 minutes' walk and Kazimierz is a short walk. Its party piece is a medieval basement with billiards and table tennis. The staff speak several languages and, by the property's own account, will share tips and take guests on a tour (Tripadvisor ↗).
Theme: the cellar with a pool table.
Facts: free WiFi; airport shuttle; family rooms; room service; garden; laundry; tea and coffee maker in every room.

Heavy Metal, a Banksy Museum and Late Keys
The dark months bring a gig calendar. Hype Park on Kamienna Street hosts Wolves in the Throne Room on 3 November at 20:00, Zimmer90 on 6 November at 18:00, Napalm Death on 20 November at 18:30 and The Ocean on 8 December at 19:30. At TAURON Arena, Niall Horan plays on 3 November and Korn on 17 November, both at 18:00. Muzeum Banksy, on Berka Joselewicza in Kazimierz, lists a 2 November date.

Whichever you choose, you will want a key that works after midnight.

The pick for late returns. Meininger sits under 1 km from St. Mary's and Main Market Square, and the cemetery is 1.8 km from St. Mary's, so treat it as a tram ride or a long walk. You gain a 24-hour front desk and private check-in and check-out, and you give up the old-gate intimacy of the northern Old Town. Wawel and the National Museum are nearby. The house keeps a bar, lounge, games room, terrace and coffee shop, so it works as a small clubhouse for gig-goers. Rooms are soundproofed with air-conditioning and walk-in showers. Details on this hostel.
Theme: the lit window after midnight.
Facts: shared kitchen; tour desk; elevator; family rooms; private parking; facilities for disabled guests; good breakfast.

Wawel in the Free Month
Wawel Hill and the Arcaded Courtyard are free all year. In November 2026 selected exhibitions are free too, with passes from the ticket offices on the day or online a week ahead, up to five per person. The castle is closed on 1 November. Anna Jagiellon runs from 23 October 2026 to 14 February 2027, Bernini opens on 6 November, and Vermeer's Woman with a Pearl Necklace visits on 27-30 November. Trams have not run on św. Gertrudy and Stradomska since 5 October, so use Plac Wszystkich Świętych or Poczta Główna and walk about 10 minutes.

The pick for the royal hill. Ginger Aparthostel stands under 1 km from Wawel Royal Castle and the National Museum, with Main Market Square and St. Mary's a short walk away. The cemetery is a tram ride away, not a stroll, and that is the price of living next to the castle. It is a hostel with an apartment's ambitions. Family rooms have private bathrooms, air-conditioning, city views, work desks and sofa beds. Guests share a kitchen, lounge and tour desk (Booking.com ↗).
Theme: the kitchen and the buffet.
Facts: buffet breakfast with local specialities, pastries, cheese and fruit; free WiFi; free parking; airport shuttle; washing machine, dishwasher and microwave.

Copernicus's University, Minus One Room
Collegium Maius, the university's oldest building, around an arcaded Gothic courtyard, is where Copernicus studied in the 1490s. Its museum keeps astronomical globes from his era. The Aula and the Copernicus Room are closed for renovation, but the courtyard is free and its musical clock plays several times a day. Guided tours in English run at 12:30 Tuesday to Friday (PLN 26, reduced PLN 14). Individual visits are free on Wednesdays.
A man who rearranged the heavens did it in a courtyard this small, and I find that more astonishing than any observatory.
The Dark Months on the Square
Daylight runs thin: on 15 December the sun rises at 7:32 and sets at 15:39, about 8 hours of light. The Main Square answers with its Christmas market from 27 November 2026 to 6 January 2027. On the first Thursday of December, 3 December in 2026, makers carry their szopki, nativity scenes built like miniature fantasy churches, to the Mickiewicz monument for judging. UNESCO listed the tradition in 2018. Plan outdoor sights for the morning and the museums for the afternoon.
Choosing a Base
Compared with the cemetery's permanent residents, all four bases are positively lively. Take the north gate if Rakowicki and Floriańska are the plan. Take the block off the square if you want the hejnał in your ears. Take the Wawel side for the castle, and the 24-hour desk if your evenings end in a mosh pit. For anything beyond these four, the wider list of accommodations in Krakow is the next stop.
