Every holiday coast keeps one number it likes to be measured by. Świnoujście keeps a shelf of them: 44 islands, the widest beach in Poland, and the tallest lighthouse on the whole Baltic. Gdańsk answers questions with a crane, Toruń with gingerbread; this scatter of islands at the mouth of the Świna answers with a tower, a leading line and a boat timetable. I read towns the way I once read Toruń's riverbank - with a notebook and a watch - and this one repays the habit, because almost everything worth doing here has a season, an hour and a doorway. What follows is that ledger: when to climb, sail, swim and feast, and six places to stay along the route.
The Tower at the End of a Boat Route
Poland's tallest lighthouse was first lit on 1 December 1857, and it still works for a living. Visitors climb just over 300 spiral steps - no lift - to a gallery over the port, with the German resort coast towards Ahlbeck and Heringsdorf visible on clear days and the Międzyzdroje cliffs away east. Inside sits a small museum of lighthouse-keeping and sea rescue. The odd part: since 2023 the only road runs through the LNG terminal's security zone, so nobody walks here - you arrive by boat from the town-centre quay, which somehow suits a navigation light. Time it for a dry, clear day: hours stretch to 10:00-20:00 in July and August and shrink to 10:00-16:00 from November, when boats run thinner and you should phone first (+48 91 321 60 63).

Reading the Boat Timetable
The package ticket is the tidy way: boat both ways from the Adler quay on Wybrzeże Władysława IV, the guided Fort Gerharda tour and the lighthouse climb, about three hours door to door. Buy it at the Adler desks a short walk from the Museum of Sea Fishing. Departures cluster late morning and early afternoon, and the operators' own schedules disagree with each other more than I'd like, so confirm the day's times at the desk or with the tourist information point on Plac Słowiański - they will also mark the safest way down to the water after dark. From the beach side, summer bus 13 runs in July and August, or it's a 25-minute walk. My own rule: the first boat of the day beats the last.

For the early-boat mornings, this is my pick of the six - and not only because the front desk never sleeps. It sits 300 m from the main promenade, borders Park Zdrojowy, and its garden gives you somewhere to sit while the town wakes; rooms add a balcony or terrace and free parking comes with the house. By my count it is about 2 km from the boat quay, a decent warm-up walk.

The Widest Beach in the Country
The sand runs up to about 200 m deep at its widest, and the sea keeps adding to it - the shoreline has crept seaward over the centuries. The Blue Flag has gone up for 20 summers without a break at the Centrum-Uznam bathing water, the only such unbroken run in Poland. Lifeguards hold a daily 10:00-17:00 watch from late June to early September; outside those dates, swim at the quieter Wolin-side beaches or not at all. Behind the dunes the promenade runs 12 km west into Germany, ending eventually in Bansin, and the sun sets over the water, not behind the town. One honest note from a man who has felt an onshore Baltic wind rearrange his plans: when it turns, the same air that freshens the day will send you off the breakwater.

For the guarded-beach days and the rainy-evening swims, the resort at Baltic Park Molo is hard to argue with: 20 m from the Baltic Park Molo Aquapark, where every guest gets a free hour daily and half-price after that, and 130 m from the promenade itself. Two pools, a spa and bike hire keep the field log varied; the Oyster restaurant serves oysters, halibut and live lobster - billed as the town's only live lobster - and the desk speaks German and English.

Forts That Keep a Calendar
The old Prussian forts run on the punctuality of their garrisons. Fort Gerharda, raised between 1848 and 1859, turns visitors into recruits for an hour and a quarter of mock drill, then unlocks the Coastal Defence Museum with nearly 2,000 objects; it runs daily to the end of September, weekends only from 3 November to 1 January, and closes for January. Fort Anioła, a rotunda modelled on Rome's Castel Sant'Angelo, adds an Amber Mine in July and August. Fort Zachodni houses the fortress-history museum and asks you to phone ahead in winter, weather permitting everything. If your dates are wrong, the forts simply won't see you - which is, in its way, honest bookkeeping.

After a morning of being shouted at by a Prussian sergeant, I thawed here: spa and steam room, beauty services, a fitness room, and a work desk in every room where I copied out the day's numbers before dinner. The resort sits a 4-minute walk from Swinoujscie Beach, keeps three restaurants - the Polish-French Polonaise among them - and serves breakfast with local specialities and warm dishes; Ahlbeck pier lies 7 km along the coast.

The Leading Line
At the end of the west breakwater stands Stawa Młyny, white with a black roof, shaped like a windmill and frequently mistaken for one. It is a navigation beacon from the 1870s, the front light of a leading line fixed at 170°12' - its partner, the Galeriowa beacon, stands 522 m inland - and ships still steer by the pair. The city adopted it into its logo, and conservators have lately entered it in the monuments register. Walk out early or at sunset, which the sea provides on the western horizon; on windy days spray crosses the stones, so ask the front desk or the tourist point whether the breakwater is walkable that day. Free, always, and the best photograph in town before breakfast.

For the sunset-and-early-start crowd, an apartment beats a hotel room: each unit here has a living room, a kitchenette with dishwasher and fridge, and floor space to spread maps and logbooks. The complex sits at the Baltic Park Molo end, aquapark and promenade nearby, with two restaurants on site and a breakfast guests call exceptional; the lighthouse lies 9 km off by land, with the boat quay doing the real work of approach.

A Rainy-Day Panel
Grey afternoons are catered for. The Museum of Sea Fishing occupies the former town hall on Plac Rybaka and keeps old navigation instruments, marine specimens and aquaria children adore, including a piranha of some seniority; it opens free on Sundays from September to June. Out east at Przytór, the Underground City runs guided two-hour tours through a kilometre of tunnels at fixed times, bookable by phone. In the spa quarter, Uzdrowisko Świnoujście sells individual brine baths and peat wraps to non-residents, and the free graduation towers near ul. Żeromskiego let you breathe the brine without an appointment. I once earned my bread testing routes before I sent anyone across them, and on wet days I still audit a town indoors first.

For the rainy-panel days and the walkable evenings, I liked this quiet-corner hotel: a spacious garden and terrace, breakfast of regional and European cooking in its restaurant, and on-site bicycle rental with cycling paths nearby - the practical way out towards the Przytór bunkers. The beach lies 1.1 km away; private parking costs extra.

An Almanac of Noise and Light
The town's calendar is the other instrument panel.
- Late June - Dni Morza, the Sea Days: three free open-air concert evenings in the centre, Neptune's parade and ships in port; night ferries run past 02:00.
- Early July - the Regaty Unity Line regatta races from the marina; free to watch.
- Turn of July and August - Jarmark Bałtycki fills the quay with regional food, a craft-brewery zone and evening concerts.
- Mid-August - Sail Świnoujście and the Wiatrak sea-song festival; the third weekend brings International Lighthouse Day with the Lighthouse Lovers' Society.
- Late August - FAMA, the long-running student arts campus, spreads concerts and theatre across town.
- September - the Usedom marathon starts here in the morning; the Usedomer Musikfestival runs to mid-October, with a Świnoujście concert at the MDK.
- December - the Christmas market on Plac Wolności and the Santa winter swim in early December.
- Every Saturday, all year - parkrun, 09:00, Park Zdrojowy, free.
The Daylight Ledger
Plan by the light, because the town does. High season runs late June to August, when lifeguards watch the water and extra UBB trains run to Germany half-hourly through the day; May, June and September suit cyclists who want the path to themselves. From mid-October the resort changes character: forts keep short or weekend hours, beach bars close, but the lighthouse, museums and sanatoria work all year, and from 17 October to 18 April a single Bielik ferry shares the crossing with a bus through the tunnel. Germany is a minutes-long train ride - Ahlbeck's pier dates to 1898, Heringsdorf's stretches 508 m - and the last trains back run close to midnight. Confirm each day's timings at the tourist information point; they keep the current sheets.
The Forest East of the Salt
Fifteen km east, Międzyzdroje plays the louder resort: a pier, a promenade under high moraine cliffs, and behind it the beech forest of Wolin National Park, where the bison show enclosure waits about 1.5 km on foot from the car parks and the Kawcza Góra viewpoint watches over the cliffs. City buses make the trip; the bison, sensibly, do not hurry. A full listing of Międzyzdroje hotels and apartments sits online if you would rather sleep on that side.

For the forest-and-bison mornings, this is the reasoned pick: surrounded by the park's forests with the beach 150 m away, and spacious corner suites in green and white, each with kitchenette, balcony and seating area. Guests use the sauna, indoor children's pool and steam bath free; the restaurant does international cooking with a bar beside it. Międzyzdroje station is 2.5 km off, the centre a 10-minute walk.

Closing the Log
Kraków measures itself in legends and Gdańsk in amber; Świnoujście, sensibly, measures itself in light - four seconds on, one second dark, all night, in white or red depending which way the ship is bound. Decide which second you want to be standing in - a gallery at 10:00, a breakwater at sunset, a market square at 21:00 - and the room follows from that. That is the whole method, and it travels home to Toruń with me.
